Play in the Streets @ Cigna Sunday Streets

FullSizeRender (100)This past weekend post brunch, the crew and I decided to walk off the massive amounts of carbs, eggs, and mimosas that we had just consumed and spent the rest of the afternoon outdoors at the Cigna Sunday Streets on Washington Ave.

Cigna Sunday Streets is an initiative by “Go Healthy Houston” for people to get physically active. One Sunday each month, the city is closing down a popular street and encouraging people to get outside and walk or bike.

This past weekend was the first event on Washington Ave. And it was delightful! Truly a Sunday Funday. The weather was perfect and thanks to the road closures we got to feel like rebels and walk straight down the middle of the street! Washington Ave was closed off from Heights Blvd. to Westcott which made for a nice 1.5 mile walk through the neighborhood.

Also sorts of little booths and tents were set up alongside the road selling art, giving information about health, how to ride the metro, renting bikes etc. I even was able to sign up for another half marathon. Ah! There were lots of food trucks out selling food. All the bars had DJ’s out on the patios blasting music for us as we went by. Lots of restaurants were also giving out free samples–we tried chocolate muffins and lemon mango spritzers from benjys, cookies from Three Brothers Bakery, tea from COCO Crepes and got free sno cones from a rando food truck!

The event was pretty family friendly with lots of kids on bikes and families with strollers. Although, I did see a few people sneaking around with beers and then no-so-sneakily walking around with giant Shiner steins….

I loved the event and can’t wait to attend the upcoming Sunday Streets at Museum Park (Nov 1) and in Midtown (Dec 13). Between now and then I’m going to invest in some rollerblades because helloooooo that was by far the coolest form of transportation I saw on the street. 🙂
