How to Have a Proper [Hunky Dory] Brunch

#BrunchKlub took a trip far, far away to London, er well, the Houston Heights, but to the new Britain-inspired restaurant Hunky Dory. It’s an adorable restaurant that opened a few weeks ago. It’s got a great outdoor patio with heaters, a cozy bar area, and plenty of tables that can fit big groups.

Having dined there for dinner, we were excited to see what the brunch brought. And despite the chaoticness of the wait staff (seating us first at the bar, moving us to a table, having three different servers, etc.), the fare turned out to be quite good. A true Brit might not consider the brunch menu to be truly authentic  English food, but my Texan belly was quite happy.

Here’s what we had….

To drink: Coffee, Bloody Mary’s, Brunch Punch and Scottish Breakfast.

The menu involves a lot of guessing. There is no description for Brunch Punch (which changes weekly) or the Scottish Breakfast (contains scotch). You spend a lot of time asking for details from the waiter. Hunky Dory does take their cocktails seriously though. They have a bunch of little perfume-equse bottles filled with things like rose water and scotch and spritz the drinks as they leave the bar so you have a serious wave of aromas when you go in for your first sip. Talk about attention to detail.

To eat: Full [Vegetarian] English Breakfast, Duck Confit Quiche, and the Bacon, Tomato, Egg Sandwich

Everything was filling and rather interesting. Especially the bread. Which was sweet and came fried. Which we’re all 95% sure that’s not a British thing to do…aside from the psuedo-french toast bread, I loved the full English breakfast. Having visited England many times, I enjoyed eating the beans, fried egg, mushrooms and charred tomato.

To split: Scones

Sweet, but not too much. Accompanied by clotted cream and homemade. They were the perfect thing to split and round the meal out.
