Eat Out / It's Fare

Take a Trip to Brasil Cafe for Brunch

Another brunch for the books ladies and gentlemen at Brasil Cafe in Montrose. Nestled into the corner of Dunlavy and Westheimer behind vines and bushes, you almost miss this gem of a brunch eatery. However despite its unassuming storefront, it must not be overlooked.

The rather dark, wood paneled interior is spacious and filled with colorful art, towering vases of flowers and a cheerful chalkboard announcing the day’s specials. Part coffee shop and bakery, part bar, and part exotic fare restaurant, Brasil spans through multiple modern dining rooms and two outdoor patios–one tree-shaded in the back and one covered patio on the street. I’ve been here many a time to grab a drink and work (on this blog!) and also enjoy live music that plays on the patio weekly, so this past weekend, after hearing much hype about it’s brunch menu, I was excited to finally try it!

You all know how I feel about creative egg dishes…We’re talking spicy “Brasil” benedict eggs, tamales and eggs, eggs El Salvador, plus all the specials of the day! Note: the menu online is smaller than what they have at the restaurant.

Seriously indecisive with my order due to the broad range of delicious options, I had to make a game time decision at the counter. I went with the Coddled Eggs with potato, asparagus, goat cheese and served with an arugula salad and toasted brioche bread. And wow, may I tell you that coddled eggs are quite an experience. My meal was layered in a jar: mashed potatoes on the bottom, then goat cheese, chopped asparagus, and a poached egg. I broke the egg on top and kind of mixed the ingredients together with each bite. It was kind of bizarre, but kind of awesome.

Other’s at the table went with the Avocado Toast (my close second choice), the Eggs El Salvador (spicier than expected), and the Brasil Benedict (served with roasted potatoes and grilled tomatoes).

We all grabbed our numbers, and seated ourselves in the back patio on a beautiful Houston spring day. We people watched, got rained on by some pollen/flowers, and hung out with the Brasil dog Boo (he’s just the cutest!! And has no respect for personal space).

Brasil is great because you order at a counter, so when you’re going with a group you don’t want to deal with the hassle of spliting the check. That being said, the time you spend waiting in the loooong line could have been spent gossiping at a table with your besties over a fat carafe of mimosas. Also, when my friends went back to grab a pastry for dessert they were gone like 15 minutes and we had to debate whether or not we needed to send a recon mission in for them.

Nevertheless, it’s nice to see a Houston company thriving! I will definitely be back to enjoy the beautiful patio and people watch in and try out the other exotic menu items (tamales, empanadas, etc!).
