Homey bar. Downtown views. Pregame spot for a dancing night. And now the perfect spot to grab a cup of joe.

Around the Corner is an EaDo bar turned coffee shop is housed inside an old turquoise bungalow from 1903 who’s back patio overlooks the east side of Downtown Houston. It’s got this super neighborhoody vibe that is a touch reminiscent of Rainey Street in Austin.

Around the Corner opened in 2015 as a bar and recently began its coffee service this month. If the kitschy name reminds you of another cleverly named local spot, Down the Street, then you’re not mistaken! They’re owned by the same company with a penchant for ambiguity.

Lured by a day off work and good weather, Natalie and I ventured over one afternoon to check out the new coffee service–Natalie got an Americano, I got a hot tea. The drinks were served in mismatched mugs, making it feel like you were in someone’s living room. We grabbed a spot on the porch and worked for a bit, enjoying the pleasant Houston weather and free wifi. Knowing that Around the Corner sources it’s pastries from nearby Weight + Measures, I ordered a croissant as well.

Sharing a parking lot with Arlo’s Ballroom, there’s plenty of space to leave your car during the day. However if you wanted to pregame there at the cocktail lounge before going out, the parking apparently gets a bit tight. Luckily, there’s still lots of free street parking available in EaDo, and there’s a club a block away that does valet.

If you’re looking to change up your coffee drinking habits, Around the Corner is a good one to throw into the mix (we recommend it as a bar too!). They’re open early on weekdays (6:30am) and late on weekends (2am), serving food and drinks all day long. They’ve got a delightful shaded front porch suitable for working and a cozy interior perfect for catching up, plus a Sunday brunch menu that I’m looking to check out!
