Houston, there’s a new crust in town! We’ve been #blessed as one of the pilot cities for Papa John’s new Gluten-Free Pizza Crust. I was able to try out the new gluten-free pizza this week.

Papa John’s Gluten-Free Crust is made with Ancient Grains, specifically sorghum, teff, amaranth and quinoa. The Gluten-Free pizza itself was much smaller than the typical pizza–more of a personal pie than one made for sharing with big groups.

For comparison purposes, I also got a regular gluten-full pizza with the same toppings–Mediterranean Veggie! The gluten-free crust is definitely different from regular crust. It’s much thinner and crunchier. More like a thin crust pizza. When topped with loads of cheese, sauce and veggies, it’s clear that the crust is definitely different from regular crust, but I wouldn’t necessarily pinpoint it as gluten-free. My roommate unknowingly ate the gluten-free pizza without seeing the regular one for comparison and didn’t even realize it was gluten-free.

The gluten free crust launched in April 2017 along with the organic toppings pilot. These two initiatives are the latest effort from Papa John’s Pizza to use only quality ingredients in all of their menu items and their commitment to menu transparency.

If you’re trying to be healthy and cut out excess gluten from your diet (yet, still want to eat pizza), Papa John’s Gluten Free Crust might be a good option for you. However, if you have a serious sensitivity to gluten or have Celiac Disease, note that Papa John’s cannot guarantee that the pizza will be free from gluten exposure during the pizza-making process in-store.
