Houston by nature of its incredible diversity has plenty of French inspired spots for culture and cuisine.Whether you studied abroad in Paris and speak the language fluently, or you’re like me and just happen to know every word to Les Miserables and recently befriended half the employees who work at French owned Air Liquide, Houston is overflowing with cafes, restaurants, theaters and shops to help you get your French fix. From colorful wicker chairs to freshly made street crepes, here are our favorite places to channel your inner francophile in Houston.

Where to Get Your French Fix in Houston

For Drinks…

Liberation de Paris. Houston Spec’s. In August 1944, the USA liberated France during World War II, leaving its impact on the world, including a small French boy from Brittany. His son has since gone on to create a wine that would represent the gratitude from his family and the French people for the USA and the liberation of Paris. The wines are made in France and imported by a Houston-based company. You can read the full story about the wine here and pick up a bottle at any Spec’s!

For a Show…

Et Voilà Théâtre. 333 S. Jensen. Nothing like immersing yourself in French culture by attending a French play…entirely in French. Et Voilà Théâtre is a community theater group that was created in 1998 in the Houston French-speaking community. Every year, the troupe produces one or two plays performed in French (don’t worry, there’s also English subtitles!). They also offer a weekly theater workshop conducted in French, as well as art exhibits.

For Coffee…

Café Poetes. 122 W. Gray Street. This adorable French eatery is quaint and transports you to a whimsical library cafe (reminds me of Beauty and the Beast!) with colorful books and a ladder that takes you to the high reaching shelves. Sip matcha lavender lattes or split a pot of fresh brewed tea in this sparkling white nook in Midtown. The breakfast menu is also on point with savory and sweet eclairs–I highly recommend the Mozzarella di Buffala.

For Crepes…

Melange Creperie. 711 Heights Boulevard. Inspired by the open air Parisian street carts making fresh crepes in the park, Sean Carroll opened his own crepe stand in Houston. What started out as a humble two burner cart on in a rented parking lot at the the corner of Taft and Westheimer and local farmers markets has transformed into an expansive brick-and-mortar cafe in Heights Mercantile. Classic items on the menu include nutella and banana crepes, ham and cheese crepes, and this incredibly unique crepe with egg, siracha, and wonton crackers that has been a staple on the menu since the street cart days. The menu has since expanded and also includes sandwiches and salads.  Menu offers lots of vegetarian options! If you’re headed to Heights Mercantile on a weekend, be prepared to wait 30+ minutes for a crepe.

For Lunch…

Sweet Paris CreperieLocations in Rice Village and CITYCENTRE. This counter-service cafe is a bloggers dream. With bright lights, marble table tops, Eiffel Tower order numbers, and Instagram-worthy plates, Sweet Paris is the perfect spot for a quick bite to eat. The wicker chairs and pops of turquoise add to the ambiance. The breakfast crepes are hearty and filling with things like eggs, beans, avocado and cheese and often come with a side salad.

For Brunch…

Brasserie Du Parc. 1440 Lamar St. Located a block away from Discovery Green with a expansive greenhouse windows and black and white checkered floors, it’s easy to feel yourself whisked away to a Parisian street cafe as you settle into the wicker chairs and sip a coffee. Whether you’re going for happy hour after work Downtown or a Sunday brunch, Brasserie Du Parc offers patrons a lovely selection of French inspired foods. Although the price point is a bit higher than some of the more casual street cafes, the menu has accessible options that live up to its claim to be “Houston’s most authentic French cuisine.”

For Dinner…

Rise no 2. 1700 Post Oak Blvd. After going to Rise no 2, you will never look at a souffle the same way again. The chefs inside the second-floor eatery at Blvd Place work some serious magic to create the richest, fluffiest souffles ever. The interior of the restaurant is super cozy and quaint with a fantastic wine selection, infamous marshmallow soup, and scrabble letters that reserve your name at the table. If you’re feeling pretty decadent get the cheese plate and get the whole spiel as they bring out the cheese cart and take you around the world with samples. One souffle is pretty filling, but do try to save room for dessert because the dessert souffles change seasonally and are unlike anything you’ve ever tried!
