The Houston art scene is constantly on the move and changing. Some of our favorite walls in Houston have been painted over (sad day), but new ones have sprouted up in their place! Exciting events like HUE Mural Festival and the Washington Avenue Arts District continue to encourage local artists to bring color and life to Houston’s city. Below is a round up of our favorite walls that have cropped up in the past few months that are a must-see stop and photo-op in 2017.
East Downtown
- Houston Wall. 2011 Leeland St. Painted by Houston favorite artist, GONZO247, you may recognize this design from a former snapchat filter (#millennial). It’s located in East Downtown at the Houston Graffiti Building and faces east. Take pictures in the early morning or late evening to avoid glare and messy shadows getting in your view. Perfect spot to swing by with out of town guests!
- Paint Drip Wall. 1502 St. Emanuel St. This wall popped up during HUE Mural Festival. It’s simple but bright and has plenty of potential. If you go to this area on a weekend, there will likely be lots of other photographers and art lovers out and about — you might even make a friend or two like we did! Art by @_.sy._
- Metamorfose Butterfly Wall. 2201 Preston St. A beautiful bit of art that brightens up the side of a white warehouse building in East Downtown. It’s bright with vibrant primary colors and a gorgeous monarch butterfly that when positioned perfectly gives you wings! Art by @studioflop.
The Heights
- #ILoveYouWall. 350 W. 19th St. Painted on the side of Harold’s in the Heights, this wall says “I Love You” in more ways than one. The latest wall by artist Shelbi Nicole was commissioned by a man who used it to propose to his girlfriend on New Year’s Day *awww*. Taking pics in at this location a bit tricky because it’s in a parking lot and there might be cars lined up right in front, but with a bit of creativity you can def snap a pic in front of your favorite love section.
- Geometric Wall. 1301 Yale St. Taking eagle wings to the next level here, this wall is as vibrant as the city of Houston itself. Painted by @elnacho1105, this wall brings to life the United Farm Workers flag and is a symbol for Mexican-American workers. It’s easily accessible off Yale Street and rarely has cars parked in front. It faces south and always has good light!
Northside
- Fineapple. 1700 Opelousas St. If you were a vegetable, you’d be a CUTEcumber. And if you like puns (aka the name of this blog!), you def want to head over to St. Arnold’s Brewery to see this gem by @treesmcgee.
- El Chan Guri. 1800 Opelousas St. Dreamy and whimsical, this wall is a creation from Nicaraguan artist Luis Valle (@el_chan_guri on Instagram!) at the HUE Mural Festival. We used it for a blog birthday shoot and absolutely fell in love.
Washington Corridor
- Girl Power. 2101 Winter St. These larger than life profiles painted by Royal (@treesmcgee)pop off the Silver Street Studios wall with fierceness and intensity. A common denominator in her pieces is indigenous people from all over the world. This location is fun because not only can you take pictures up close, and far away, but there’s also some ledges that you can *safely* climb on for other interesting points of views.
- Geometric Heads. 2101 Winter St. Vincent Fink, resident artist at Winter Street Studios, did a little painting in his studio backyard’s as part of the #ArtWallHou initiative. Choose your favorite trippy, geometric head and take home a souvenir snapshot of this artist’s unique creation. Below is mine, but there are four profiles to choose from at this location.
- Head in the Clouds. 2101 Winter St. Drawing on inspiration from her children, artist Jessica Rice paints the perfect day dream. Find inspiration in her work outside Winter Street Studios. This spot is great because you can park easily and the wall faces north so there’s usually not much super direct sun in the morning or late afternoon that can add glare to a photo.
