Houston Events You Can’t Miss This August

Does anyone else feel like we should be prepping for back to school? I’m 26 years old and haven’t been in school for 4+ years! Why do I still feel the need to buy binders and pencils? Will this ever go away?

OK, snapped out of it. For us adults, August is just another month — another hot month with tons to do!

Rest of this month

• Blanket Bingo at Market Square Park: Thursday, Aug. 16. $10 bingo card (9 games) from 6 to 9 pm. Market there.
• Treehouse happy hour at the Grove: Friday, Aug. 17, 4 to 7 pm. The Grove’s drink specials and bar bites to the upstairs patio, which is typically reserved for private events. Beat the heat with select beers ($3), cocktails ($6) or a refreshing glass of house rosé ($5) and nosh on shrimp corndogs ($6), bell pepper hummus ($8) and truffle fries with smoked garlic aioli ($5 small, $10 large). More info here.
• Tecovas Boots Pop-Up Sale:  Saturday Aug. 18, 9am – 5pm at 1201 Oliver Street.  As a general rule, this Austin-based boots shop usually don’t have sales or discounts online, but they’re making a special exception for their in person Warehouse Sale! Find gently used, sample, and returned inventory at 35% to 50% discounts on a first come, first serve basis. Check out their collection online, and join the Facebook event page. 
  
• Movies at Market Square Park featuring Field of Dreams: Friday, Aug. 24. Free movie in the park — not gonna not. On the market.
• Spanish Wines Class: Saturday, August 25, at 6 pm. Join Winemaker Ryan Levy to learn more about the amazing wines from the diverse regions of Spain paired with light Spanish bites. $69 per person. Cheers!
• GHP’s Through The Looking Glass Soiree: Saturday, Aug. 25, 7 pm. Cheshire Cat after party at 11 pm.  Both at Hotel Zaza in the Museum District. • TransCanada Theater District Houston Open House: Sunday, Aug. 26, noon to 5 pm. Marking the official launch of the 2018–19 performing arts season, the event is a free, family-friendly festival that takes place at venues throughout the Theater District in downtown Houston. The world’s a stage.

• Houston Restaurant Weeks: Aug. 1 to Labor Day. Pri fixe menus at 200 Houston restaurants, and your meal feeds the city’s hungry. Dig in. PS, here are our thoughts on HRW!
• The Alley’s The Mousetrap: Aug. 10 to Sept. 16. A classic whodunnit show written by Agatha Christie. A new hotel opens in England on a very snowy weekend. Five guests, two innkeepers and a policeman are snowed in with… A MURDER! This mystery — sprinkled with plenty of comic relief — is a part of The Alley’s Summer Chills series, which is one of my faves! Check it out — tickets from $29! More info, tickets and times!
• Open House, the latest installation from Havel Ruck Projects, is now on view at Sam Houston Park daily from dawn until dusk. For the site-specific installation, artists Dan Havel and Dean Ruck transformed a small house into an interactive public sculpture that nods to Houston’s past and present. The work is part of the Houston Downtown Management District’s Art Blocks initiative.
• Mike + Doug Starn: Big Bambú at the Museum of Fine Arts Houston: Now through Monday, September 3. This is the Museum’s immersive summer exhibition that visitors can explore. You can find more details here.

• National Girlfriends’ Day: Wednesday, Aug. 1, from  6 to 8 pm. At the Alexan 5151, located at 5151 Hidalgo Street. Friendship, drinks, light bites, makeup touchups from Switch2Pure and jewelry from Burdlife. It’s free, but RSVP!
• Wine 101 Class: Saturday, Aug, 4, at 6 pm. Know you love wine, but want to know more about it? Winemaker and Sommelier, Ryan Levy, will lead you through a wine tasting and answer questions such as: Why does vintage matter? What is the proper way to open and serve wine to your guests? How do you approach a wine list when you don’t recognize anything? What is the best temperature to store and serve wine? How do I know if a bottle of wine is corked, cooked, or oxidized? $60 per person. Cheers!
• Toast & Twirl Workshop: Saturday, Aug. 4, 9:15 am. Food, fun, creative workshops and mingling! Tickets are $85, and a portion of the proceeds go to charity! Tickets here.

• DIY Downtown: Wednesday, Aug. 8, at WeWork. A hands-on workshop led by Pop Shop America where participants can decorate their own coffee mugs.
• Club PetSet Young Professionals After Party. Thursday, Aug. 9, at Brenner’s on the Bayou. The CPYP Soiree After Party attendees get complimentary, signature drinks and appetizers courtesy of Brenner’s on the Bayou. It’s free for CPYP members and $15 for friends.
• The Wheel Workers free concert: Friday, Aug. 10, 7 pm. In this new concert series, the Downtown District pairs regional musical talent with local breweries for an evening of live music and craft beer, plus giveaways, lawn games and more. Market Square Park.
• Agatha Christie’sThe Mousetrap at The Alley. Enjoy a cool escape from the sizzling summer heat. Directed by Interim Artistic Director James Black, The Mousetrap is the longest running show in world theatre history. The play runs August 10 – September 2, 2018. Tickets are available at alleytheatre.org.
• Black Heritage Music and Arts Fest: Saturday, Aug. 11, through Sunday, Aug. 12, noon to 4 pm, at the George R. Brown Convention Center. Fun for the whole fam. All the deets here!
• The Market at Sawyer Yards: Saturday, Aug. 11, from 6 to 10 pm, at Sawyer Yards. Surrounded by the highest concentration of working artists in all of Texas, the market coincides with 2nd Saturday Open Studios, when artists from The Silos at Sawyer Yards, Winter, Spring, Summer and Silver Street Studios, open their studios to the public. More deets here.
