5 Favorite Things: August

August Favorites (1)

If you’ve been reading this blog for any amount of time, you know we’re into great restaurant’s, great shows, and juicing dating gossip (both on screen and online).  August is another great month to eat well, drink well and make bad decisions go on dates. Read on to hear about what we love most about spending the month in Houston.

Measure 002 - CaptionedShakespeare in the City. In honor of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death that happens, yep, in August, the famous Globe Theatre is airing renditions of the lesser known Shakespeare shows: Measure for Measure (Aug 7), The Merchant of Venice (from Aug 28), and Richard II (from Sept 18). You can get your culture on and see these gems in the River Oaks Theatre. Get your tickets here!

screen_shot_2016-06-11_at_5_37_19_pmNo Pay May: Okay yes, I know. We’re in August. BUT this Houston blogger is hilar. She does what very few can do–that is go on 31 dates in 31 days and lived (and blogged) to tell the tale. Visit her blog for a tale of her never-ending search for love (and free food). Be sure to start at the beginning! She chronicles each date and it’s interesting to see her get more wise (and cynical) as the month goes on. She keeps her identity secret and refers to herself as Extra Cash Cathy. Get lost in her world here at Then get some date ideas of your own with our popular 10 Places to Take your Tinder Date  and 10 Places to Take Your Bumble Date blog posts.

HRW_logo_2016Houston Restaurant Weeks: The best part of this? The fact that there are WEEKS of excellent dining deals in Houston for the month of August. Get in on these prix fixe menus and try out places (i.e. fancy AF ones) that you normally wouldn’t go because of the price point. Each time you dine at a participating restaurant, a portion of the meal gets donated to the Houston Food Bank. This year the philanthropic noshing takes place August 1 – September 5. We’re big fans of this month and blogged a bunch about it last year. Be sure to check out our reviews with the tag HRW! Search the HRW menu and see who’s on the list this year.

Screen Shot 2016-07-24 at 7.48.47 PMHouston Patio Season: To be fair, if you’re always cold like me (especially during the over air-conditioned summer months), patio season is pretty much year round. Especially if you like nature in the sense that you like to day drink outside. Lucky for you we’ve outlined the best bar spots to hit up this summer. We tell you when to go, what to bring, and what to avoid–we’re locals with a passion for sharing our Houston adventures and write like we’re speaking to a friend (we’re all friends riiiiight??!). Check out the list here.

FullSizeRender (186)Vintner’s Daughter: If you’re in the mood to #treatyoself, look no further than this luxurious bottle of botanical serum. Filled with every essential oil you can think of, Vintner’s Daughter does everything from preventing wrinkles to protecting against free radical damage. Just a few drops of this magic oil has you smelling like a spice shop and radiating healthy skin. You apply it to your face and neck via the “push and press” method—there’s instructions included with the serum with a final step that includes “admire your radiant skin.” I had the opportunity to try this liquid gold. If you’re interested in checking it out, it recently launched at Houston’s glamorous and one-of-a-kind Kuhl-Linscomb store on Kirby.

Bonus! UnREAL: If you love reality TV and the end of this season of the Bachelorette gives you heartburn, have no fear! Read our extensive Bachelorette commentary and set your DVR to record UnREAL. The Lifetime show is in its second season, so you’ll definitely want to binge watch Season 1 first because #characterdevelopment. The show is fiction (or so that’s what they want us to think) and details all the crazy things that goes on behind the scenes of producing “Everlasting” – aka a knock off version of the Bachelor. It’s eye-opening. If you’re looking for the most dramatic season yet, look no further.
