Half marathon training leads to discovering of all sorts of exciting new routes to run. Latest discovery? The Heights Hike and Bike Trail. This is a a delightful paved, two-way trail that traces its way along White Oak Bayou, crosses through the Heights neighborhoods and connects again with the White Oak Bayou Trail. It was a really pretty run. My pictures don’t do it justice. I saw cardinals, blue jays, bunnies and butterflies. There is a handmade sign hung on the stop sign where you cross White Oak Blvd that says (in Spanish) “Nothing you are about to see has been seen by anyone.” What a beautiful running mantra!
Places to connect with the Heights Hike and Bike Trail:
- UH Downtown Naylor Student Parking Lot (where they host the Run for Wellness 5K series)
- Sawyer Heights Lofts (good place to park your car!)
- Hieghts Boulevard and 7th
- TJ Jester and White Oak Bayou
The Houston Bayou system is just the coolest. I love how this trail connects to a bunch of different parks and you could run or bike for miles without having to retrace your steps. While running over the weekend, I saw an exciting sign that said the city is going to build out the rest of White Oak Bayou beginning in Fall 2016! Eek! Can’t wait.
