Brunch it Out Downtown at Walker Street Kitchen

Now that the hype and chaos has died down from the Super Bowl, downtown Houston is a bit calmer, thus making it the perfect time to make a visit to Walker Street Kitchen. Located inside the Marriott Marquis, Walker Street Kitchen is the perfect start to a day downtown Houston. The Marriott Marquis, known for its legendary Texas shaped lazy river pool opened at the end of 2016. Walker Street Kitchen offers visitors a breakfast buffet, a made to order brunch menu, and a daily lunch/dinner menu.

We made a visit for brunch and absolutely loved the bright, light décor of the place. Walker Street Kitchen has a modern loft vibe crossed with a New England beach home. Fantastic natural light flows through the windows, austere metal fixtures hang from the ceiling, and comfy booths with throw pillows line the walls.

As a frequent patron of Marriot hotels, I elected to order from the made to order breakfast menu instead of the breakfast buffet. The buffet is a pretty standard selection of breakfast offerings like eggs, bacon, cereal, pastries, cheese and meat platters, fresh fruit, etc. I will say, the cheesy potato casserole definitely caught my eye and if I ever go back, I’ll definitely be sure to try that!

I ordered the WSK Omelet with all the veggies, some cheddar cheese and a side of hash browns. I asked for a side of salsa and was delivered a house made red and green options to choose from. Both delightful options that fueled my eternal need to add spice and a Texmex twist to nearly every breakfast dish I try.

Natalie ordered the Brisket Hash. We deemed it a winner because it (more or less) fit the Whole30 diet she was on—diets don’t count on the weekend right? She overlooked potential preparation slips up as it had whole ingredients like onions, poblano peppers, potatoes, and salsa verde. The poached eggs were cooked perfectly and as she said it “breaking eggs open never gets old.”

On the weekends, Walker Street Kitchen alternates between a build-your-own Bloody Mary and mimosa bar. A huuuuugggeeee fan of Bloody Mary’s, I was delighted to find that I arrived on the right day! After receiving a mason jar of vodka on the rocks, I went over the building-your-own station and went to town. I went with the Habanero tomato juice and topped it with plenty of pickled okra, lemon some olives and of course a celery leaf. Brunch complete!
