Living in Houston, I don’t get out to the suburbs as much as I like, so this trip was a delightful adventure to visit Sugar Land and get some autumn shopping in for upcoming road trips. I visited Scott & Molly’s boutique to refresh my fall wardrobe with cozy sweaters and picked up a fabulous new metallic mask!

On my way out, I picked up some food to-go to bring to my parents for our monthly family dinner. I loved that many of the restaurants in First Colony Mall are now offering carryout, delivery and curbside options. Now, it’s super easy to grab a meal to-go in a safe manner!

Santorini with Dimassi’s Mediterranean

Luckily, we still have fabulous weather in Houston and it’s totally possible to sit poolside for several more months. Trick your mind into thinking you’re at a lux Mediterranean beach by closing your eyes and diving into a tray of appetizers from this family owned and operated restaurant. Since 1992, Dimassi’s has provided authentic, delicious, and healthy Halal and Mediterranean food to Texans.

What to order: For my vegan and vegetarian friends, the options here are endless! Some of my favorite dishes include Vegan Cabbage Rolls, Spinach Pie (aka Spanakopita), Tabouli, Spicy Hummus, Baklava and Rose Water. Order online for in-store pick-up.

New York City with Grimaldi’s Pizza

This family business opened it’s first location under the Brooklyn Bridge in the borough’s DUMBO neighborhood in 1990. Since then Grimaldi’s has been cooking coal-fired, brick-oven pizza based on over 100 years of pizza-making traditions. Bite into a piece of New York City with the flavorful sauces and flaky pizza crusts. Perfect for date night, game watch or picnic in the park!

What to order: Lemon Arugula Salad, Garden Pesto Pizza and a bottle of wine. Gluten free crust options also available! Place your order online for pick-up or delivery.

Safety Measures at First Colony Mall

My visit to First Colony Mall was the first time that I have been to a mall since the start of COVID. I went on a Sunday afternoon and felt very safe. New measures have been implemented to help ensure the health and safety for all who enter the mall, including hand-sanitizing stations, touch-free interactions to open doors, frequent and intense cleanings, social distancing directions and floor dots marking where to stand. They also have a new filtered air system that captures airborne viruses. I was happy to see everyone wearing masks as well.

My favorite part was the bathrooms that had signs on the mirrors saying “Wash your hands like you just ate wings and you’re about to put on a wedding dress.”

I loved that much of the mall is outside centered around an avenue of palm trees and bright murals! Between the group of restaurants, the mall has a lovely green space with lawn chairs and tables spread out. They also had a big projector screen playing sports, which would be a nice place to relax and enjoy the cool autumn weather. By now, most stores are back open too. You can check the current list here.

For additional information on restaurants and to confirm which type of service is being offered, please call ahead. If you’re looking to dine in, I find it’s helpful to call ahead for a reservation.
